That’s not all, the flower in fact yields an interesting saffron aroma when dry. The plant is as beautiful as the flower, with long knife-like leaves that grow as tall as 60 centimeters. Crocosmia or the falling stars are widely popular flowering plants. Crocosmia flowers are colorful and unusual-looking. They are deeply hued and vibrant, tube-shaped flowers with small clusters of blossoms that branch out into a characteristic freesia-like flower spike. The Crocosmia plant belongs to the genus in the Iridaceae family.

Crocosmia flower actually derives its name from the Greek word ‘Krokos,’ which translates to saffron. Thus faithful to its name, it also emits a lovely saffron-like aroma. The crocosmia plant is as beautiful as the flower, with long knife-like leaves that grow as tall as 60 centimeters. Bring it home to invite nectar-loving butterflies to hover in your garden.

Crocosmia is also commonly referred to as ‘Lucifer’ since you can easily find a brilliant, paprika-like red crocosmia.

Crocosmia bulbs typically start blooming in the early summer months. Crocosmia lucifer blooms throughout the summer season. Though, the lucifer flower blooms at its peak in July and August. Crocosmia can easily sail through the winter season too.

The Crocosmia plant consists of approximately 13 distinct species and three hybrids, including the crocosmias and crocosmiiflora.

Crocosmia plants are pretty easy to cultivate and quite hardy, making them suitable for various climates.

Lucifer flowers do best with total sun exposure and occasional partial shade. It is recommended that you cut the stems at an angle and place them in lukewarm water with cut flower food to extend their life.

Crocosmia flower also makes for an outstanding flower for your flower arrangements. Their arching branches and long-lasting, brilliantly colored flowers make the perfect decor.

Crocosmia also looks lovely growing in front of a wall or against a fence. They make excellent companions for ornamental grasses and can be grown with flowering shrubs.

These vibrantly colored blooms will liven up your perennial gardens. Crocosmia plant’s upright foliage gives an appealing vertical decor design even when the plants are not in bloom. So it is an all package plant.

Plant Care 

  • Use an 8-inch pot to plant your bulbs.
  • Mix the special potting mix with soil to make it porous.
  • Plant all bulbs twice as deep as the size of the bulbs.
  • Water your plant generously and thoroughly right after potting.
  • Place your pot where it gets at least 6 hours of sunlight.
  • Water the pot every 3-4 days or whenever the soil feels dry.
